Gintama, as a canon, is a very fourth-wall breaking canon -- its characters generally know all about all things Japanese culture related (video games, anime/manga, movies, celebrities, etc.) as well as big American movies/celebrities as well. The characters in Gintama also know that they are characters, and regularly talk about their author, Sorachi Hideaki, and/or Sunrise, who produces the anime.

Below is a handy little form for fourth wall permissions for the Gintama cast at Luceti!

Kari's "canon" is pretty much centered around 4th-walling, since the concept of her world is that every work of fiction is representative of an actual universe that exists out there (although they don't always translate accurately). Her magical self exists in many different worlds as various works of fiction, be it company mascots, comic book heroes, modern works of art in a museum, etc. Seriously, feel free to make up something ridiculous and recognize her from it -- the only consistent thing is that her secret identity in fiction has no connection to who she really is in her world, if she even has one at all. So basically, Hoshikyo is free-game, but Kari is not.

I'd love to have more of a focus on the fact that KH is a video game that your character may or may not have enjoyed playing, rather than a deep focus on the plot, but plot talk is okay too. A casual player of the KH games would probably call Lea "Axel," since it's only in the handheld side titles that his backstory is revealed and his real name is returned to after KH2. In fact, it is a huge point of contention among KH fans that many players look down on the handheld games and treat them as spinoffs even though they do actually advance plot and provide VITAL world-building, so if you wanted two Gintama characters to go at it over that, there's an opportunity for derp.

Oh, and feel free to rub it in that Sora is the protag and Lea is a side character at best :D

I say that Star Ocean 3 is complicated regarding the 4th wall because a pivotal plot point is the reveal to these characters the fact that they are indeed characters in an MMO style game. The final boss is, effectively, the creator of the 'Eternal Sphere' as the game is called within the canon. It's a sore spot for Cliff, and something that he will never mention to anyone outside of his castmates.

This is why I say 'no' for any overt 4th walling. It's happened already within the canon itself.
